Sagrada Familia – The Holy Church is the famous church in Spain which has been under construction right from 18th century (in 1882) and is expected to be completed before the end of this century.
The construction of this church has been extending beyond centuries which by itself a wonder and I am sure that at the end of construction this church is going to get an unmatchable record in the wonders of the world.
The church was originally designed by the famous 18th century architect – Antoni Gaudi. And they are trying to construct as per his design. Gaudi himself spent many years of his life in the design and construction of this church but he was not able to complete it during his life time. The construction extended beyond his life time but the Spanish civil war interrupted the construction and also destroyed many portions which were constructed. So, currently they are trying to reconstruct those destroyed portions and also the other portions as designed by Gaudi.
Though I have no knowledge on architecture, I was truly inspired by the way the Gaudi has designed the columns of the church. It should be even more great for the architecture professionals. I was told that these curves were designed to converge sun light and make the interior more bright.
I was very much impressed with the carvings in the entrance of the church as well. They were so minute, detailed, sharp and very precise that seemed to be so perfect that there can be nothing better than this..
As you can see, the church is so tall that you can’t see the tomb top at all. And in the interior I was really amazed by the size of large windows covered with glass. You have to keep your head up all the time in the church. Everything is soo tall!!
I could have appreciated the technical details more had I known a little bit of building architecture… Anyways, I was revered to see such a massive magnificent structure – the brain child of a man no more, being constructed across centuries in the way he wanted it to be. It is something really great!
On seeing this sculpture at the left entrance, I just couldn’t help thinking about Howard Roark from Fountain Head by Ayn Rand.. Some how it reminded me of modern building architecture with very straight cuts and curves.. 😉
I don’t know if I will be alive when the Church is going to be completed.. The completion of the church would be a historic event in the entire world!
So, I was indeed happy to have laid my footsteps in this historic place in Barcelona..
