Last weekend me and Sri went to Yercaud for celebrating our 3rd anniversary.. Well, not exactly the weekend – we were there on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
This is the first ever trip that I have arranged in my life! Until now, all the trips Sri used to take care of (& my dad used to take care of before marriage!) and I just used to give suggestions/comments about how things could have been better! That’s what I am good at! 😉 This time, I had to do things all on my own due to an agreement between Sri and me. But I didn’t take much time to do things. I took around 8 hours to book train tickets, hotel rooms and take print outs of the places to see in Yercaud! That’s it!!
Planning the trip
We decided to go by train and I booked Yercaud express for it since it seemed to be the safest option with least expectancy of delay & such! So, booking train wasn’t a problem at all. But before booking train, I had to do some research for deciding which place to go. Thanks to this site – Must See in India which gave me lot of information about nearby places, their distance from Chennai, trains and other means of transport and above all, list of all interesting places to see. This site was really helpful in choosing the best place for 3 days to relax.
For booking hotel rooms, it again took me some time and effort where in the Trip Advisor website came to my rescue. The only hotel where they did not ask for money in advance was the Hotel Shevaroys! Also, the room rents weren’t that costly. And, I saw in the reviews from Trip Advisor that the rooms were worth the money being charged! So, I just had to call the hotel and book the room. The only disadvantage with their website is, though they have a lot of pictures, you cannot know what kind of room the picture actually shows!! But anyways, I decided to book Dahlia suites they have since they seem to be of reasonable rate. Later I came to know that Hotel Shevaroys was one of the oldest hotel in Yercaud and is maintaining a good quality standard. So, I was happy with the booking I made!
On Wednesday night we started our trip with the train journey. And we reached on time on Thursday morning at Salem railway station. It took us around an hour to reach uphill to Yercaud through bus. Just 22 INR and we were there without any trouble!! This can happen only in India!! I mean, so cheap!! 😉
It was no trouble us for finding the hotel room because the bus just dropped us in front of the hotel! How nice!! 🙂 Then the checking in procedure was of course fairly easy!
We found the rooms to be comfortable and as read in the reviews – worthy of the money being paid!
There were 3 restaurants attached to the hotel and also a massage center, internet cafe and a super market! The best part was that the hotel encompasses a small forest or plantation kind of area and the whole environment looks so natural and fresh!!
I did notice in the sites that Yercaud has around 10 places or so to visit. I assumed that it would keep us busy for at least 2-3 days! But then I realized that all those 10 spots were so near that one wouldn’t need even one full day to see them all! 😐
We started our trip with a temple visit – The Shervaroyan temple. The specialty about this temple is that it is within a cave which the locals claim to run longer till Karnataka. But it was more like a touristic spot rather than a temple! And there were view points near the temple outside from where we could get some nice view of surrounding hills.
And after that, we went straight to GRT Nature Trails restaurant – Salem Heights for our lunch. They had something called sky-walk where the bridge floor was fitted with glass and you can see the ground from a great height! It was kinda nice and also, the view from there was good! After a nice lunch there, we just walked around 2 km back to hotel. The weather was so pleasant that we never felt tired at all! But soon after we reached our room, we just lied down to sleep. We woke up when it was time for dinner!! The first day got over so easily!!
We started our second day with a walk within the hotel’s garden/plantation. There was this strange plant with this weird leaf and beautiful flowers and big big trees! It was indeed refreshing to have a morning walk in such a place!
We went to the lake for boating after the walking.. Enjoyed the pedal boating for half an hour and then we planned to rent cycle for rent and go around to see view points like ladies seat, gents seat, pakoda point, etc. But then after coming to know that I might have to pedal around 4-5 km, I decided not to tire myself.. So, somehow Sri convinced the cycle renting guy to rent his own Pulsar bike for us as a special case! (He has never rented his bike before!) And luckily we got the bike to roam around. But unfortunately, the atmosphere was soo foggy that we couldn’t see anything in the view points. It was just white!!
But Sri wasn’t going to give up! We took the bike and went around the loop road of Yercaud which is around 30km. Again, the ride was good and the weather was pleasant but due to fog, we couldn’t get any view of landscapes!
After the ride, it was almost 3PM when we reached back hotel. So, it was just the time to have lunch and relax. So, the day 2 also got over without seeing much!
And in the last day, we just roamed around the lake again. We were planning to go other view points but the fog was even more thicker that the locals advised us not to expect a good view even if we go there. So, we just had a small walk around the lake and we went to the near by so-called deer park where there are no deers just to see deserted trees covered with mist and fogs! Anyways… it was very poetic!
Thats when I got really bored and started reading Chetan Bhagat’s 5 point someone in the hotel room itself and finished it before we boarded the train in the night!
Basically, we didn’t see anything at all in yercaud apart from the lake and the temple! But that’s actually it in Yercaud. There is nothing much to see. Its a place to relax and enjoy peace! The best part was our hotel because of its environment – full of trees and garden and flowers!
Overall, we had a nice relaxing weekend energizing us for the week ahead!
